INTRODUCTION
Before beginning the next part of this series, I would like to ask two critical questions:
1. How did a country founded on Christian principles become so apostate?
The comprehensive answer to this question has many contributing factors. However, there is one in particular that should enrage anyone who has affection for either this country or the souls of its progeny. That is the systematic teaching of evolution in a manner that tears down the faith of young minds through the use of clever arguments based on lies and distorted interpretations of the facts. To be clear, an honest and sincere examination of all theories of origins is scientifically acceptable. In so doing, truth will fall where it should fall. However, the facts presented in current teachings are tortured to fit a theory that is irrational and in many cases, conflicts with known facts and laws of genetics, as well as direct observation. And as far as the separation of church and state goes: if it is acceptable to teach a theory implying that a religiously held belief is perhaps incorrect, then teaching another theory that supports a religiously held belief may be correct should also be acceptable. After all, schools in America should not exist to promote one ideology over another. They should exist to promote academic education, which never thrives in the face of censorship.
This begs the next question:
2. Where is the outrage?
To those that claim to have found peace with the theory of evolution by coming to the conclusion that God could have brought everything into existence through evolution: that is NOT what His Word tells us. His Word tells us that He created everything in six days – and a scholarly translation of those six days means a literal 24-hour period and not six days composed of thousands of years. Our children very clearly understand that if evolution is true then God is either a liar or non-existent. Science through the use of evolution tries to answer that question. Therefore, since this is perhaps one of the most important questions a human being can ask themselves, an honest presentation of science is paramount. It affects the way a human being may live, which also affects the culture in which that human may live.
Part IV of this commentary on Pearson/Prentice Hall’s Biology 2006 textbook by Miller and Levine will concentrate on embryology, imagined by several people in the distant past but first made popular by Ernest Haeckel.
Evaluation ; – Page 385 –
Similarities in Embryology The early stages, or embryos, of many animals with backbones are very similar…What do these similarities mean? (Emphasis as it appears in the textbook.)
Darwin also had something to say about the necessary similarities of embryos that his theory pre-supposed.
He stated:
“Generally the embryos of the most distinct species belonging to the same class are
closely similar, but become, when fully developed, widely dissimilar. “
Ernst Haeckel, a contemporary of Darwin, ran with this concept and drew diagrams of selected animals to demonstrate this commonality.
Background: in order for embryology (the study of the growth and development of embryos from conception to birth) to support evolution, Darwin and Haeckel claimed that the evolutionary history of vertebrate species can be seen in its embryonic stages. In other words, invertebrate animals go through the same stages of development as their predecessors and in so doing, repeat the embryonic stages of their evolutionary predecessors before developing into their evolved stage. Haeckel went so far as to create a very scientific-sounding name for his theory. He called it “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny”: “ontogeny” meaning changes in growth and development patterns and “phylogeny” meaning the evolutionary history of a species, and “recapitulates” being somewhat repetitive and meaning that during the embryonic period of an animal’s life, it repeats the development stages of its evolutionary ancestor. Both Haeckel and Darwin believed that this was evidence that these species shared a common ancestor.
But are the early stages, or embryos, of many animals with backbones similar, as the book claims?
Page 385, Figure 15-17, which presents a picture of a chicken, turtle and rat in their embryonic stage states:
In their early stages of development, chickens, turtles, and rats look similar, providing
evidence that they shared a common ancestry…
Counterpoint – Is this true? Once again, the facts have been twisted and/or left out to give the appearance of truth. The book admits that Haeckel “fudged” to make the earliest stages of some embryos seem more similar than they actually are. But it also goes on to say immediately afterward:
“Errors aside, however, it is clear that the same groups of embryonic cells, develop in the same order and in similar patterns to produce the tissues and organs of all (emphasis mine) vertebrates.”
This statement is more than misleading. To be kind, I will say it is disingenuous. Not only was Haeckel exposed as a fraud during his lifetime because the drawings he produced were altered to fit his theory, but he also handpicked embryos that happened to look somewhat similar and concluded that all vertebrate embryos at the earliest stages of development appear to be similar. For example, he disregarded the images of fishes and amphibians within their own classification that looked significantly different and at the earliest stages of development. Disregarding any examples that contradict your theory does not qualify as including all!
There is a point in development where some embryos look similar but that is for a very brief period and not at the early stages, as claimed and as would be expected. From the time of conception and as the cell divides, the stages of development are extremely different. Additionally, the features that look similar turn out to develop into very different organs for very different functions. In other words, Haeckel chose the examples that best fit his theory and artistically altered them. Then he disregarded the many examples that contradicted his theory. Of course, students are not told that the differences are evident in the early stages of development, as well as the cell movements from the time of fertility through mature development.
Today some biology books still go as far as telling students that the folds in the neck areas of embryos represent gill slits that are evidence of our early stages of evolutionary development – in spite of the fact that we now know that these folds are called pharyngeal “clefs” or “pouches” and develop into the inner ear and parathyroid gland in other species – including humans!
The problems that genetics present for this position are also ignored, including the fact that DNA and RNA prevent the reproduction of any species with another species, which if thought through the theory presumes. In other words, if different species developed at different embryological stages, that new species would not be able to reproduce unless another new species of the same kind developed at the same time and in the same geographic location and somehow they managed to connect. Genetics also dictates that from conception onward, the genetic codes of each species is very specific and only in rare occasions will it allow for hybrid reproductions, which usually are sterile and do not happen naturally .
Regardless of the evidence, the iconographic pictures of altered embryos remains one of evolutions strongest arguments for common ancestry and some version of these continue to appear in this textbook as well as others.
Why? Why would textbooks keep regurgitating failed theories when they state that support for these failed theories exist? If that were true, why would they not present the successful and perfected theories instead? This textbook does the same when it comes to the Miller-Urey experiments, discussed in Part 2 of this series. It presents the failed theory and/or experiment, states that other successful experiments and/or theories exist to support it, but then neglects to present those theories.
In the words of one of the world’s most prominent evolutionist, the late Stephen Jay Gould:
“The iconography of persuasion strikes even closer than words to the core of our being.
Every demagogue, every humorist, every advertising executive, has known and exploited
the evocative power of a well-chosen picture…These are the most potent sources of conformity, since ideas passing as descriptions lead us to equate the tentative with the unambiguously factual. “
And I would like to add: when pictures appear in textbooks and are presented by a teacher in a classroom with all kinds of scientific-sounding assertions, the authority of their word prevails against the undeveloped critical thinking skills of students. To make matters worse, parents all over the world have neglected their biblical directive to personally educate their children (see Prov. 24:3ff) and the secularists have been more than happy to fill in the gap. Yet we dare to wonder how a country founded on Christian principles became so apostate? There is no mystery here – just an honest look at classrooms across America and their textbooks provide the answer.
Question from TPATH to RoseAnn: Please understand that I am not disputing your statement regarding the true intent and meaning of the the length of a day as you described at the beginning of this PART IV. However, as there any other reference in the Old or New Testament that will confirm that statement? This question was inspired by the written accounts that Moses lived beyond 500 years of age. Could this have been or is there a misconception in the actual length of a year, a day, etc.?

TPATH ~ May 3, 2015 ~ As discussed in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, I will be reviewing the most popular biology textbook in America, Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2006, Biology, written by Kenneth R. Miller and Joseph S. Levine. I am doing so to offer a “counterpoint” to their interpretation of origins, which has been cleverly designed by the authors to mislead students through psychological manipulations, tortured interpretations of the facts, and downright lies. It is my hope that this work will serve as an instrument for parents and church leaders in defending the biblical account of origins that is being assaulted in academia and used as a tool to tear down the students’ trust in the Word of God – and subsequently to challenge their faith in the existence of God Himself.
Before beginning my counterpoint argument against Punctuated Equilibrium, as presented on page 439 of the textbook, it is necessary to establish the importance of qualifying something as a “theory.”
Page 14 – correctly defines how a theory is developed. It states:
In science, the word theory applies to a well-tested explanation that unifies a
broad range of observations. A theory enables scientists to make accurate predictions
about new situations. (Emphasis as it appears in the textbook.)
Counterpoint – The book mentions but cleverly does not stress the importance of making accurate predictions that testing is supposed to verify. And it also does not address the many predictions Darwin made about his “theory” that the evidence has disqualified. Most noteworthy, Darwin made several predictions that can be found in his Origin of Species, 6th edition, chapters 6, 10, 15. He correctly predicted:
of the same group, must assuredly have existed…
species, must have been inconceivably great…
Darwin’s predictions were legitimate and logical. If his theory was true, certainly there would have been an enormous amount of transitional fossils for all categories of life. At the time Darwin made these predictions, the fields of paleontology (the study of the history of living organisms) and geology were young and burgeoning sciences. Over a century and a half later, that is no longer the case.
So what about the “well-tested” explanation of the theory mentioned on page 14 of the textbook? Has science documented in the quantities Darwin predicted the gradual transition from one living species to another referred to as Descent with Modification?
The answer is a loud and resounding NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Despite the facts, evolutionists will tell you that there are numerous transitional fossils that have been found as evidence of evolution. I will devote another segment of this series to examine the so-called “evidences of evolution”, and argue that they should more properly be called “evidences of deception.”
What does the real evidence show?
In 1999, Prof. Steve Jones of University College of London published his own version of Darwin’s Origin of Species. On page 252 of this publication, Almost Like a Whale, he stated:
The fossil record – in defiance of Darwin’s whole idea of gradual change – often makes
great leaps from one form to the next. Far from the display of intermediates to be
expected from slow advance through natural selection many species appear without
warning, persist in fixed form and disappear, leaving no descendants. Geology assuredly does not reveal any finely graduated organic chain, and this is the most obvious and
gravest objection which can be urged against the theory of evolution.
Contrary to the predictions made by Darwin, gradualism from a common ancestor in the fossil record is nowhere to be found. After over a century and a half of paleontological and geological research, the fossil record shows that there was a sudden explosion of life forms at what evolutionists call the Cambrian period and these life forms continue the same as we observe them today. In light of strong evidence to the contrary, the theory of evolution has not abandoned its suppositions; instead it has attempted to explain the evidence in a way to make it conform to their theory.
How have evolutionists tortured the evidence to fit their theory?
They have proposed that life continues in a static way until there is a sudden and rapid genetic change in a small period of time. The idea was first proposed by German geneticist Richard Goldschmidt in the 1940s and 50s. It was called the Hopeful Monster Hypothesis. Aside from the laughable suggestion that lacks logic as well as a mechanism, the idea that all of a sudden one species rapidly changes enough to give birth to another species in a small period of time is beyond ridiculous – aside from which there is no supporting evidence. And if it were true, these “hopeful monsters” would have to mate with other hopeful monsters to survive as a species – the odds of which are exponential at best. Additionally, if true, all pregnant women would have cause for concern.
Evolutionists realized they had to explain the sudden appearance of life forms in the Cambrian geologic level in a more scientific-sounding manner. So, rather than abort their theology in light of contrary evidence, they re-invented the Hopeful Monster Hypothesis and now call it Punctuated Equilibrium.
Page 439 –
…Some species, such as horseshoe crabs, have changed very little from the time they
first appeared in the fossil record. In other words, much of the time these species are in
a state of equilibrium. At several points in the fossil record, changes in animals and plants occurred over relatively short periods of time. Some biologists suggest that most
new species are produced by periods of rapid change.
Counterpoint – Saying “some” species have changed very little in the fossil record is disingenuous at best, as is the claim that the fossil record bears evidence of rapid change. It does not. Every species that survived did so as it first appeared in the fossil record. The book goes on to try to explain how this rapid development may have occurred after mass extinctions. Again, this suggestion is made as a way of proposing a logical way for this evolutionary problem to be solved, and it is totally based on faith and not evidence.
Page 439 (continued) –
Scientists use the term punctuated equilibrium to describe this pattern of long, stable periods interrupted by brief periods of more rapid change. (Emphasis as it appears in the textbook.)
Counterpoint – Again: there is no evidence to support these “brief periods of more rapid change.” Additionally, the obvious problems with this theory are many:
• There is a sudden explosion of life forms in the fossil record in the Cambrian period, and they continue to exist today as they did back then.
• One species giving birth to another is genetically and observably unsupportable – even if the change happened rapidly.
• If the impossible happened and a “hopeful monster” did exist, another hopeful monster would have to exist at the same time and in the same geographical location in order for the species to reproduce.
• An explanation for the mechanism that produces this type of rapid genetic change has evaded even the most creative evolutionist’s mind.
• Intermediate or transitional forms from a common ancestor in the fossil record have not been found in over 150 years of research – even evidence of rapid change should have been discovered in this length of time. And the ones they claim to be “evidence” have all been discounted or just plain stretches of the imagination.
In conclusion, the explosion of life at the Cambrian period not only contradicts any plausible explanation for evolution but supports the biblical account wherein we are told that every life form was created in the first week of the creation. A prediction to support the biblical narrative would state that we can expect to find a sudden explosion of life at one point in time, which is just what the evidence reveals. So while unbelievers scramble to create a theory to explain the facts that somehow seems believable to unbelievers, they must rely on faith NOT evidence.
In the words of the late Dr. Duane Gish: “It is unbelievable what unbelievers have to believe to be unbelievers.”
And to that, I say AMEN!
NOTE FROM TPATH: Over the billion years, give or take a few hundred million, since the earth has supported life and over those billion years, approximately 50 billion life forms have existed. However, out of that massive architecture of time and creature there exists only one species aware of life and death, past and future and a desire to comprehend the vastness of his world.

April 24, 2015 ~TPATH~ As discussed in Part 1 of this series, it has become my mission to present a counterpoint to what is being taught in high school biology classes in a manner designed to challenge the faith of students. In an effort to accomplish this mission, I will be reviewing the most popular biology book in America, Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2006, Biology, written by Kenneth R. Miller and Joseph S. Levine.
Part 1 focused on Darwinian evolution, which presented the theory with much psychological manipulation and innuendos designed to make the student believe evolution is well-supported by the facts and any other theory is for the mentally-challenged. Part 2 will focus on the teachings of the origination of organic molecules, and the misrepresentations and downright lies associated with the Miller-Urey experiment.
Charles Darwin acknowledged the need for a way for organic matter to “evolve” from inorganic matter. In other words, he recognized that there had to be a way for life to evolve from non-life – or a bunch of chemicals. The book tries to address this problem by discussing the Miller-Urey experiment in a way that is both misleading and intellectually dishonest.
On page 424, in the first two sentences in the section entitled THE FIRST ORGANIC MOLECULES, the problem is accurately presented. The book acknowledges that atoms cannot assemble themselves into living cells, and that the oxygen in our atmosphere would destroy many kinds of organic molecules that are protected within a cell. That’s just about where the honesty ends. The next sentence declares that the early Earth was different – inferring that the atmosphere was different. The first paragraph ends with a sentence: Could organic molecules have evolved under those conditions?
Counterpoint – First, the problem is acknowledged, then the student is cleverly led to believe that the problems we observe today may not have existed in the past. This is an important assumption, since circumstances would have to have been different in order to support different experimental observations: that the oxygen in our atmosphere would not allow such an evolution to occur.
But is the assumption correct?
In order to circumvent the oxygen problem, evolutionists have proposed that the early atmosphere did not contain oxygen. Then they go on to assume that the oxygen problem would gradually change as primitive life produced oxygen through processes such as photosynthesis. Aside from the fact that geological and paleontological research has revealed that an oxygen-based atmosphere must have existed from the earliest times, the argument is circular at best. In other words, if the presence of oxygen in the early atmosphere would prevent the evolution of life from non-life and the argument is that oxygen would have slowly been produced from primitive life, you should be asking: if you can’t produce life with oxygen in the atmosphere, how can life produce the oxygen? If you’re confused, you should be.
Page 424 – presents the Miller-Urey experiment as a possible answer to their dilemma. In this experiment back in the 1950s, Stanley Miller and Harold Urey designed an experiment where they added hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and water to represent the atmosphere of the early Earth. They did NOT add oxygen. Then they passed an electrical current through the mixture to simulate lightening.
The book goes on to say that the results were “spectacular” because the experiment produced several amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Then it declares:
Miller and Urey’s experiments suggested how mixtures of the organic compounds
necessary for life could have arisen from simpler compounds present on a primitive Earth.
Counterpoint – The book conveniently omits the fact that the proteins created were the wrong kind needed for life.
Page 424 continued – Under Figure 17-8 of the experiment, the book states in an egregiously misleading way (a downright lie, actually):
This and other experiments suggest how simple compounds found on the early Earth could have combined to form the organic compounds needed for life.
It concludes this section by admitting that the simulations used by Miller-Urey were inaccurate but goes on to say:
However, similar experiments based on more current knowledge of Earth’s early atmosphere have also produced organic compounds…
Counterpoint – Oh – where to start! Let’s begin with a logical question:
If the unsuccessful Miller-Urey experiment was succeeded by successful experiments,
why did the authors go into detail about the unsuccessful experiment and exclude any information about the “similar experiments” that they imply were successful?
Perhaps the answer is that the organic compounds that were created over the past 60 some odd years were just as unsuccessful for the origination of life as the experiment in question – regardless of what the authors would have students believe. What the students are not told is that the amino acids produced in the experiment were the wrong types of proteins to produce life and that the atmosphere created was basically irrelevant, as were the rest of the conditions produced in the experiment.
Here’s another critical question that demands an answer regarding the origination of a cell:
If somehow we were able to create in a laboratory experiment a situation where carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids were produced, would we have created a living cell?
The answer is still a loud and resounding NO!!!!!!!!
Today we know that cells are much more than an assemblage of chemicals. They are complex machines that perform a myriad of functions to produce and sustain life. You see, the question is not whether organic molecules can be synthesized in a laboratory, the question is how can molecules (first inorganic, which then evolve into organic) produce living cells – or how can life evolve from non-life?
Much to the chagrin of many hopeful evolutionists who have had to abandon their Miller-Urey-types of experiments for lack of success, the programming of information into a cell will continue to be their ultimate downfall. After over a half of a century of experimentation, evolutionists still can’t create the right types of proteins in the right conditions to produce life, never mind trying to figure out how genetic codes are created. But somehow – someway – they manage to present their failures to our children in a manner that makes them seem credible. However, it is the responsibility of parents to teach truth to their children. Somehow – someway – we have delegated that responsibility to strangers, and then we are surprised by the strange ideas that our children have been indoctrinated into believing. Hence, this series is being written to assist parents in teaching the truth. Hopefully, they will do just that – for if they do, the truth will most definitely prevail.

COUNTERPOINT, PART 1

Introduction
After agonizing over the condition of America today, I have realized that many of our problems are attributable to an increasingly godless culture rooted in the teachings of evolution. It is illogical to expect our children to live by God’s moral codes established in Genesis, or that our rights come from God, when they are taught that His creation account is nothing more than a myth. It is also disturbing that the “evidences” for evolution were founded upon fallacious interpretations of observable data and the successful censoring of opposing points of view.
Therefore, it has become my mission to present a counterpoint to what is being taught in order to rescue our children from being led down an academic path that mocks our faith with innuendos and inferences based on a worldview that is neither scientifically supportable nor logical. The atheistic theology being presented to our children disguised as authoritative and empirical science through twisted conclusions and cleverly constructed insinuations is as much an insult to our intelligence as it is to our faith.
In this series I will be evaluating Pearson/Prentice Hall’s Biology textbook, 2006, written by Kenneth R. Miller and Joseph S. Levine that was adopted by the state of Texas, which asserts significant influence on textbook selections throughout the nation. Additionally, Pearson’s website also acknowledges that the mirror-like Miller & Levine iBiology Textbooks are the world’s bestselling high school biology programs.
The first article in this series will focus on the basics of Darwinian evolution presented in Chapter 15 of the book. It sets the stage with psychological coercion and straw men arguments that sophomores in high school lack the critical thinking skills to defend against. What scientific explanation can account for the diversity of life? The answer is a collection of scientific facts, observations, and hypotheses known as evolutionary theory. Evolution, or change over time, is the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms. A scientific theory is a well-supported testable explanation of phenomena that have occurred in the natural world.
Counterpoint – The answer provided to the question above is presented as the only credible explanation for origins. The way it is structured dismisses the growing and overwhelming support for creationism as being a legitimate possibility. The claim that evolution is credible becomes authoritative in the students’ minds, who are led to believe that it is well-supported by facts. They are not told that the data that will be discussed neither supports nor denies evolution or creationism. It is simply data that is subject to interpretation. In evolution, the theory drives the interpretation of the data to fit a naturalistic worldview as opposed to a supernatural worldview that requires intervention. In order to twist the data to fit the theory, impartiality is sacrificed – many times in a tortured manner, as this work will reveal.
Although it is true, as the book states, that natural selection occurs and the fittest do survive better than those that are unfit, survival is not a proof of evolution, as the students are led to believe. Dr. Walt Brown in his book In the Beginning, stated it best. He said: Natural selection cannot produce new genes; it only selects among preexisting characteristics.” He goes on to say, “While natural selection occurred, nothing evolved, and in fact, some biodiversity was lost…In other words, while natural selection sometimes explains the survival of the fittest, it does not explain the origin of the fittest…” I will add to Dr. Brown’s critique by saying that not only doesn’t natural selection explain the origin of the fittest, neither has Darwin nor any of his successors ever proposed a mechanism that adds information to the genetic code that would result in the evolution of a new creature.
Since the scientific criteria for a good theory requires that it should be repeatable, observable, predictable , and falsifiable, obviously any theory regarding origins cannot fully comply with this standard. Regardless, the authors of this textbook do their best to make the student believe that their theory is beyond challenge and is observable. To be sure, there is observation but it is the observation of impartial data that can be used to support Intelligent Design just as easily as it can be used to support Evolution, as will be discussed in a future article on homology. When data supports two conflicting theories, it is deceptive to claim that it proves only one of the theories.

Darwin observed that the characteristics of many animals and plants varied noticeably among the different islands of the Galapagos. After returning to England, Darwin began to wonder if animals living on different islands had once been members of the same species. According to this hypothesis, these separate species would have evolved from an original South American ancestor species after becoming isolated from one another. Was this possible? If so, it would turn people’s view of the natural world upside down.
Counterpoint – The observations being made are not proof of evolution in progress but observations of diversity within the plant and animal kingdoms. The book also draws the conclusion that this observation alone was an assault on the prevailing view at the time – inferring “creationism.”
Furthermore, diversity within a family (phyla) can be observed and is NOT evolution at all. For instance, it is believed by both creationists and evolutionists that all the breeds of dogs known today have descended from the gray wolf – with many of the breeds being the result of selective breeding over the past century. This “observable” diversity that resulted from breeding – whether selective or natural – is not evidence of evolution, since the traits of the resulting animals were traits that existed in the gray wolf from the beginning. Breeding just “selects” certain heritable traits over others. However, evolutionists would have you believe that the diversity that we can observe in progress in dogs, represents evolution of other animals in the fossil record. This defies logic.
Ironically, diversity in the animal kingdom resulting from natural or selective breeding supports the biblical account of Noah bringing two of every animal into the Ark. Creationists have long argued that Noah only had to bring the original type of the animal into the ark and not all the species of the animal that have been developed over time. This theory reduces the number of animals necessary to repopulate the planet. Once again, the data used to support the theory of evolution also supports the theory of the Noah’s Flood, and therefore cannot be used as proof for either.

Most Europeans in Darwin’s day believed that the Earth and all its forms of life had been created only a few thousand years ago…Rocks and major geological features were thought to have been produced suddenly by catastrophic events that humans rarely, if ever, witnessed.
Counterpoint – If students are led to believe that the evolutionists represent the “great thinkers”, does that imply that creationists represent the “backward thinkers”? This is also a direct reference to Noah’s Flood as being the catalyst for the geological features. It seems references to intelligent design can be censored based on separation of church and state and the inferences of a “Designer” but derogatory remarks that insinuate creationists are intellectually challenged are permissible.
Additionally, this is also a blatant lie. We can “observe” in the scientific sense, that catastrophic events produce many of the geologic features we see today. Case in point: Mount St. Helens. This observable eruption in May of 1980 produced much of the strata layers that evolutionists claim are the result of successive layers of sediment deposited over long periods of time – and it did it in a 24-hour period! Additionally, the flume experiment produced the same laboratory results (see: http://www.icr.org/article/experiments-stratification/) which can be repeated, observed, falsified, and predicted.

The Struggle for Existence …Darwin realized that high birth rates and a shortage of life’s basic needs would eventually force organisms into competition for resources. The struggle for existence means that members of each species compete regularly to obtain food, living space, and other necessities of life…This struggle for existence was central to Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Counterpoint – Direct observation of Darwin’s realizations stated in the above text contradicts this statement. For instance, human beings gravitate toward cities to live in, where they do not compete in the ways described above. Their gathering together enables them to share resources. This is also true in the animal kingdom. There are flocks, herds, packs, colonies, etc., etc. In all these instances animals live together and do not compete with each other but cooperate for survival, all of which disproves Darwin’s central premise.

Over time, natural selection results in changes in the inherited characteristics of a population. These changes increase a species’ fitness in its environment.
DESCENT WITH MODIFICATION Darwin proposed that over long periods, natural selection produces organisms that have different structures, establish different niches, or occupy different habitats…Each living species has descended, with changes, from other species over time. He referred to this principle as descent with modification.
Counterpoint – Survival of the Fittest does not equate to evolution. The fittest do survive but they do not evolve. A fit cat will never become any other type of animal, no matter how many years pass by. The developing science of genetics as well as direct observation supports the biblical claim that animals reproduce after their own kind.
AND.. “descent with modification” remains an atheist’s dream. The modifications – or diversity – within any living species is dependent upon the genes that exist within their gene pool. As stated previously, neither Darwin nor any of his followers, have ever proposed a mechanism that adds information into a gene pool that would allow for the procreation of an animal or plant that differs from the options that exist within the gene pool of their parents. If it did, every pregnant woman would have cause for concern.

Counterpoint – The advances referred to in this statement are as convoluted as the “evidences” detailed in this book. The last sentence, however, does contain a modicum of truth for evolutionists. In fact, they will remain uncertain about how life began for as long as they refuse to acknowledge the existence of a supernatural Creator.

The statement, “the Bible is the source of liberty” has not been found in any writings of Thomas Jefferson.
The first known appearance of this quotation, attributed to Jefferson, is in the book Our Public Schools – Christian or Secular, by Renwick Harper Martin. It could possibly be an inaccurate paraphrase of the famous line in the Declaration of Independence, “…they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” However, “endowed by their Creator with…Liberty” is not equivalent to “the Bible is the source of liberty.”
This quotation has also appeared as the prelude to a longer quotation: “The Bible is the source of liberty. I have always said, and I always will say, that the studious perusal of the sacred volume will make better citizens.” This complete quotation appears, attributed to Jefferson, in the published transcript of a Senate Subcommittee hearing in 1954.
The second part of this quotation (starting with “I have always said…”) has a much older pedigree. Daniel Webster, in a letter he wrote in 1852, described a conversation he had with Jefferson some twenty-seven years earlier, in which (Webster says) Jefferson said, “I have always said, and always will say, that the studious perusal of the sacred volume will make better citizens, better fathers, and better husbands.” This letter first appeared in print in the Christian Union in 1875; the letter had been discovered and submitted to the Christian Union by a Mr. John Abbott of Fairhaven, Connecticut, who explained that the letter had been saved by a friend of his who had corresponded with Webster. Abbott commented that “It seemed to me just one of those letters which would go the rounds of the newspapers and never be forgotten.” Webster’s recounting of Jefferson’s comments in the letter have indeed had a remarkable lifespan, although, like “the Bible is the source of liberty,” Webster’s story has not been confirmed in Jefferson’s own writings.

On a recent Friday evening, the prominent Russia historian Stephen Cohen took the mic before an audience of 3,000 in Toronto to debate Western policy toward Russia in light of the Ukraine conflict.
Over the next 90 minutes, the man renowned for his pioneering scholarship on the Soviet Union accused the West of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin with NATO expansion, stoking potential war with Moscow, and failing to acknowledge its responsibility for what has happened in Ukraine in the last 15 months.
For those who have followed Cohen’s commentary, it was hardly surprising that many of his arguments dovetailed with a narrative pushed by the Kremlin, which portrays its seizure of Crimea as a response to Western meddling in Ukraine.
But toward the end of his debate with two strident Putin critics — former world chess champion Garry Kasparov and journalist Anne Applebaum — Cohen delivered a preemptive aside tailored for those who dismiss him as a dupe for the Russian leader.

Drugs and the Monarch ProjectAll of this began after the U.S. Congress in the early 1980s passed the Boland Amendment, which stopped all official financing for U.S. intelligence’s “covert war” in Nicaragua. The whole project was taken “off-line,” and financed by drug sales-the subject of Webb’s articles.
Indignation exploded when Mercury series hit the streets. Maxine Waters, Congresswoman for South-Central Los Angeles, one of the areas hardest hit by crack and drug-related violence, sent a letter to Central Intelligence Agency chief John Deutsch demanding an investigation of the Agency, in which she said, “As someone who has seen how the crack cocaine trade has devastated the South-Central Los Angeles community, I cannot exaggerate my feelings of dismay that my own government may have played a part in the origins and history of this problem. . . . The impact and the implications of the Meneses/Blandon/Roiss Contra CIA crack cocaine connection cannot be understated. We all have an obligation to get to the very bottom of the origin, development, and implementation of this seedy enterprise.”
While many were shocked at the news of apparent U.S. government drug-pushing, to me it was one more confirmation of a key aspect of the Franklin case. As I had discovered early on (as had Gary Caradori), the sexual abuse of children was only one part of the Franklin story. During the 1980s, many of the children, such as Alisha Owen and Paul Bonacci, said that they had been used as drug couriers to bring cocaine in from the West Coast for Alan Baer, Larry King [not Larry King of CNN talk radio fame; this Larry King is a black man who ran the Franklin Credit Union], and others.
Then, on September 11, 1996, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Representative Harold James, chairman of Pennsylvania’s Legislative Black Caucus, and a former undercover narcotics cop himself, also put out a call for an investigation. In the course of that press conference another name popped up, that I knew well from the Franklin investigation: George Bush.
Flanked by political leaders of both the city and the state, James declared: “As a retired undercover Philadelphia police officer who worked on narcotics cases, I know we can better impact the flow of drugs if we stop drugs from coming into this country, arrest those at the top levels of control, and punish the white-collar dealers who try to keep their hands clean while they run the entire operation. On this occasion, we must not allow anyone to use the ‘pretext of national security to accomplish another cover-up. We need an investigation that goes right to the top.”
As to where the “top” might be, James charged, in his release to the press, “previous investigations of the Iran-Contra scandal, particularly the U.S. House and Senate joint hearings in 1987, revealed the central role played by then Vice-President George Bush in covert intelligence operations. . . . One of Bush’s key lieutenants was Lt. Col. Oliver North. Bush was also appointed by Reagan to run the National Narcotics Border Interdiction Sys- tem, which supposedly coordinated efforts of all federal, state and local anti-drug agencies, especially along the south Florida coast. Bush was responsible for the White House anti-drug effort while, at the same time, according to the recent newspaper reports, tons of cocaine were allegedly supplied to street gangs by CIA-related networks.”
Concluded James, “There’s something wrong with this picture.” In response to a question from one of the ten reporters in attendance about the role of Bush, Philadelphia City Council President John Street replied, “If George Bush is involved in it, someone should find it out. This kind of activity has been going on for well over a decade.”
Lt. Col. Oliver North – whom at least one witness reported seeing at a party thrown by Larry King-had overseen the Contra resupply effort, and had been fully aware of the plane-loads of drugs coming into the United States. A U.S. Senate subcommittee report under Massachusetts Senator John Kerry cited extensive evidence that the Contras were involved in drugs, and North had noted the fact in his publicly exposed note-books.
From what I know from my own corner of the world, there is excellent reason to investigate Bush for possible involvement in the dope business. Think back to what I reported in Chapter 13, “The Washington Connection,” about how George Bush and Larry King were linked in multiple ways, including eyewitness reports placing Bush at King’s sex parties. Think about the constant rumors that King was financing the Contras, who have now been proved to have been running dope by the ton.
The first investigative reporter to ever look at Franklin, the World Herald’s James Flanery, told associates that King was “running guns and money into Nicaragua,” and that the CIA was heavily involved. (Flanery was soon taken off the story and shipped out of state for a year.)
Records exist to show that Larry King was a top contributor to a Contra “support committee,” the Citizens for America (CFA). King’s own public relations firm was also used by the Contras.
I became convinced early on that King was deeply involved with the Contras. I am reminded of the phone call State Senator Loran Schmit received on the Senate floor as the Franklin case was just beginning to break. The caller warned him off the case, because “it would lead to the highest levels of the Republican party.” I am reminded of when Larry King was finally arrested-just as he was about to go to a breakfast party in Omaha for his buddy, George Bush! I am reminded of the reports I used to hear that certain people in Omaha were charging that Omaha Police Chief Bob Wadman was protecting the expansion of the Cryps and Bloods into Omaha-far from their home turf of Los Angeles.
So, was Larry King’s buddy George Bush the country’s “drug kingpin” in the 1980s? I don’t know. But what I do know, is that if Bush were running the Contra affair, and drugs were a big part of it, that would certainly jibe 100% with everything known or rumored about Bush, Larry King, and the Franklin Credit Union. Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Representative Harold James are right – let’s investigate!. . .
As follow-up investigation from the Franklin case shows, drugs are not the deepest level of government -sponsored evil. I think the lowest level of Hell is reserved for those who conjured up and carried out the “Monarch Project.”
“Monarch” refers to young people in America who were victims of mind control experiments run either by U.S. government agencies such ‘as the Central Intelligence Agency, or military intelligence agencies.
The story told by Monarch victims – one of whom is Paul Bonacci – is that they were tortured for the purpose of creating “multiple personalities” within them. These multiple personalities could then be programmed as desired – as spies, “drug mules,” prostitutes, or assassins.
Because of legal cases still pending, I am severely limited in what I can say about the Monarch Project. Suffice it to say at this point:
Major intelligence programs in this country did and do exist for the purpose of protection of this country and to learn what other countries, particularly our Cold War enemies, were doing in this area of mind control.
I asked Bill Colby [former CIA director murdered in a staged ‘canoing accident’] to tell me what he could or would, about this. He said:
“Of course the CIA in particular was involved in investigating, learning and, on occasion, using, everything we could learn about mind control-and with extremely good reason. Following the Korean War, this country’s military and intelligence communities went through a period of absolute paranoia about just how far our enemies were ahead of us in mind control and related activities.
“There was no particular program called’ Monarch,’ contrary to what you want to think. ‘Monarch’ was merely a name that some participants in the program-who knew very little about it, other than from their own limited participation-were given to identify themselves. But, as far as the CIA was concerned, there was no such program named ‘Monarch.’
“But, with respect to mind control, I will tell you that this country spent millions upon millions supposedly catching up to our Cold War adversaries, because we believed they had developed mind control technology which exceeded anything we had. In fact, we at the Company [CIA] truly believed for a substantial period of time, that technology and techniques and drugs had been developed by Russia which would enable them to have agents who in fact really were able to have and use ESP-extra sensory perception.
“Can you imagine,” Bill continued, “how dangerous for this country it would be if you could have had someone meeting the President of the United States, who was actually able to read what was in the President’s mind?
“I know,” Bill continued, “it may sound silly today to get all carried away with this fear; but I can tell you that we took it all very seriously and believed this ESP thing for some significant time period.
“I will tell you one other thing,” Bill said, somewhat ominously, “we are not behind in knowledge of mind control. In fact, we never were, but we only found that out much later, after we had poured incredible resources into this area. And yes, I am sure, there were some problems and abuses that occurred and we will talk about them at another time.”
We did have that other talk. And, I intend, when I am freed from court restrictions, to tell that entire story in an upcoming book. I have deposited extensive documentation on the Monarch Project with people who have the means, the motivation, and, most importantly, the guts, to print the entire story, should I suffer an “accident” before I get around to it. Here, I will merely quote from the work of one of America’s finest investigative reporters, Anton Chaitkin.
I had known of Chaitkin, who writes for Executive Intelligence Review magazine, from the book he co-authored with Webster Tarpley, George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography. This 659-page-book is a devastating expose of Bush, and it played a notable role in helping to shape the 1992 presidential campaign, which Bush happily lost.
Perhaps it was because the name “Bush” was all over the Franklin scandal, that Chaitkin showed up one day in my Lincoln law office. I told him, “Look, I know you have been in some tough spots before, but are you really sure you want to poke around in this? This question of ‘mind control’ – the Monarch Project – is the most scary and, dangerous thing I have ever encountered.” As I came to know Anton, probably all that little lecture did was to spur him on. Chaitkin got his story on the Monarch Project, and printed it in the December 13, 1993, New Federalist newspaper under the headline, “Franklin Case Witnesses Implicate FBI and U.S. Elites in Child-Torture and Murder.” Here follows an abbreviated version of that article:
Paul Bonacci has described in detail being dragged to Washington for use as a sex toy for Larry King’s clients. Bonacci told investigators he was in one of the private White House tours for young male prostitutes conducted by lobbyist Craig Spence, a close political associate of Larry King in the cloak-and-dagger Contras enterprise. Spence turned up dead in a Boston hotel room in 1989, soon after his and King’s “compromising” business was exposed in a Washington Times June 29, 1989 story, headlined: “Homosexual Prostitution Inquiry Ensnares VIPs with Reagan, Bush.”
Psychiatric professionals specified in Paul Bonacci’s legal proceedings that through it all, Paul’s different “personalities” have emerged incapable of lying, with an ultra-sharp memory. In one instance detailed in The Franklin Cover- Up, Paul was taken by Larry King and others to a wooded area in California – identified after publication as the Bohemian Grove. There Paul and another boy were forced to do sex acts with and to consume parts of a child whom they had watched being murdered by the cultists. The body was to be disposed of by “the men with the hoods.” A “snuff” pornography film was made of these events; it was directed by a man the party had picked up in Las Vegas whom Paul identified as “Hunter Thompson” -the same name as a well known sleaze-culture figure.
Paul has told investigators that the ring which plunged him into Satanism was centered at Offutt U.S. Air Force Base near Omaha; that he was taken to Offutt to be sexually victimized by a babysitter’s boyfriend when he was about three years old, around 1970. Offutt is the headquarters for the Strategic Air Command, and has had a cadre of thousands of intelligence personnel.
At Offutt, and later at other military installations, Paul says this ring “trained” him by tortures, heavy drugging, and sexual degradation, while instructing him in military arts including assassination. In fact, his personal knowledge in these realms can scarcely be accounted for other than by crediting the indictments he has made.
Larry King, FBI agent Gerry Wahl/ Alan Baer, Harold Andersen, and former Omaha Police Chief Robert Wadman have all been reported as collaborators with this Satanic military-based ring. King reportedly told Paul’s captors at Offutt, “He’s young-but you trained him good.” A member of Nebraska’s Concerned Parents group reported hearing from two North Omaha witnesses that “King used to send limousines down to Offutt Air Base to pick up CIA agents for parties.” Larry King reported his own adoring relationship to the late CIA Director William Casey in a Sept. 7, 1988, interview in the Omaha publication Metropolitan.
Psychiatrists who have treated a growing number of MPD cases, victims of Satanic ritual abuse, report an alarming pattern of findings in many of their child patients. There is a structure to the personalities, conforming to what is evidently a deliberate breaking and reshaping of the mind. This phenomenon was identified to Paul Bonacci by his tormenters, and to other victims and witnesses, as the “Monarch” project. At Offutt Airbase, Paul was told that what he and other children were being subjected to was in aid of national security.
The use of mind-altering drugs, sensory deprivation, and other brainwashing techniques on U.S. citizens as subjects was the admitted practice of the CIA, certain military arms and private institutions joined in the MK-ULTRA, Artichoke, and Bluebird projects beginning in the early 1950s. A national security pretext often cited was the need to keep up with the Soviets in the race to develop a workable Manchurian Candidate human robot. With the “Monarch” (or whatever official title may be attached to it) project, the idea is extended to the production of a horde of children in whom the soul is crushed, who would spy, whore, kill, and commit suicide.
The material presented here, on this subject, must be under- stood to be only a bare introduction to a complex story with immense political and strategic ramifications. It is a beginning. Professionals probing the child victims of “Monarch” say there are clearly two responsible elements at work: the government/military, and cooperating Satanic (or more exactly pagan) cults. These are multi-generation groups, where parents donate their own children-who are proudly called “bloodline” or simply “blood” cultists – to be smashed with drugs and electric shock, and shaped. Other children are kidnapped and sold into this hell, or are brought in gradually through day-care situations.
Paul Bonacci and other child victims have given evidence in great depth on the central role of Lt. Col. Michael Aquino in this depravity. Aquino, alleged to have recently retired from an active military role, was long the leader of an Army psycho- logical warfare section which drew on his “expertise” and personal practices in brainwashing, Satanism, Nazism, homo- sexual pedophilia and murder.
A former director of the CIA was asked directly, “what about ‘Monarch’ “? He replied angrily, and ambiguously, “We stopped that between the late 1960s and the early 1970s.” If a statement of fact, this would presumably relate to official participation of the CIA.
These are some of the widely occurring separate “persons” which have been formed under torture, and the corresponding “triggers”:
. General personality-accessible under the code name ALPHA, with possible Alpha-001, Alpha-009, etc. “persons” with distinct task orientations.
. Sex programs, accessible through code name BETA; particular programs (and thus commands) are for pornography, acting, oral sex, etc.
. Assassination programs, utilizing very specific modes, and espionage, accessible through code DELTA.
. OMEGA, self-destruction programs, ranging from self mutilation to suicide by many different specific possible acts.
. GAMMA, system deception, amnesia and disinformation programs. Under this or ‘other codes are track-covering false origins for the structure, giving the child memories of tormenters dressed as space aliens or Mickey Mouse or in Wizard of Oz costumes.
There are said to be such other personality levels as Master Programmer, Black Master, and different mental levels of backup programs. There are reported to be personnel who have large numbers of child-victims’ assignments and triggers neatly filed in their little computers.
Paul Bonacci reports the following “Monarch”-related activities, often involving his “Commander” at Offutt AFB, Bill Plemmons, and Lt. Co!. Michael Aquino:
. Picking up cash in exchange for drugs at various Tennessee locations. Bonacci identifies several country music personalities as contacts.
. Trips on behalf of the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), the pedophile group now given semi- official status by the United Nations. Paul cites travel to the Netherlands and Germany carrying child pornography for sub- sequent “import” to the U.S.A. to avoid prosecution. In Amsterdam, he names “Charles Hester,” and the British “Tommie Carter,” who had on computer a global list of child pornography users. NAMBLA is also cited for organizing auctions of children.
. Travel to Hawaii, New York, Washington (in connection with Craig Spence) to compromise public figures by performing homosexual pedophile sex with them.
. The trip to California where the boy was ritually murdered, accompanied by “Monarch” contact, Mark Johnson of Denver, Colorado,
. Travel to .Mexico for the transportation of drugs, guns, and children. Paul was accompanied by the gangster-figure “Emilio,” who otherwise directed the kidnapping of Johnny Gosch of Des Moines, Iowa. Johnny Gosch’s parents commend Paul Bonacci as an accurate witness relative to that crime.
. Training under “Captain Foster” (survival skills) at Fort Riley, Kansas, under “Lt. Dave Bannister” (intelligence) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, under “Col. Harris Livik” at Fort Defiance, Virginia, who is said to run a military school and to have housed “Monarch” boys. “Col. Bill Risher” of Bamberg, South Carolina, is said to have supplied children for Michael Aquino.
. Travel to Dresden in communist East Germany, where weapons were inspected. There and in the Federal Republic of Germany, the “Monarch” personnel were frequently neo-Nazis. This milieu is a special project of Lt. Col. Aquino, who was a West European adviser to the U.S. Chiefs of Staff. Paul Bonacci has extensive experience in the Aryan Nation and other White Supremacist cults.
An account of the origin of the “Monarch” project has been compiled by those who have been debriefing MPD child-victims. Nazi experimentation in World War II concentration camps were said to have gone beyond simply insane physical tortures. They brainwashed people, for military and strategic purposes. After the war, Allen Dulles and other Western intelligence people brought Nazi doctors out for use in the United States. A teenaged concentration camp inmate named Greenbaum, who had participated to save himself, also came to the United States. Known later as “Dr. Green,” he became a high- level brainwasher, and is widely represented in brainwashing programs with a distinctive Cabalistic magic theme.

Arizona Wilder identified Mengele as using both the names of “Dr. Greenbaum” and ” Dr. Green” in her 1999 video interview with David Icke titled, Revelations of a Mother Goddess. ]
The precise details of these horrors lie deeply buried in national security archives. But this history, as told to psychiatrists, dovetails with what is definitively known about Anglo- American intelligence operations and the German Nazis. And once again, the story goes right back to Nebraska.
The killers in the Nazi camps were themselves trained and organized by psychiatrists and eugenicists, operating from the “T4” bureau. These psychiatrists had long been the pets of white supremacist British and American financier networks.
At least some of these Nazi doctors were spirited out of Germany under the supervision of for Bank of England Governor Montagu Norman and Tavistock Institute Director John R. Rees on behalf of the British government. Norman, personally an insane Theosophist who had been chief of the prewar pro-Nazi faction within England, and Rees organized postwar propaganda and continuing psychological warfare activities, and created “Orwellian” groupings within U.S. psychiatry and mental health fields.
I finally understood the true meaning of the Franklin case one night in early 1996. Watching television and skipping through the channels, I came upon the movie Billy Budd. Instantly I zeroed in on this movie, and my heart, rather than the channels, started skipping.
By the time the movie ended, the Franklin cover-up made sense. Alisha Owen’s imprisonment for telling the truth made sense. The protection of the perpetrators by our highest public officials, finally made sense. I understood, also, why it was necessary to discredit me, John DeCamp, and to kill Gary Caradori, with his eight-year-old son. Any nagging doubts I may have had about any aspects of Paul Bonacci’s charges were laid to rest. And it was clear to me, at last, that public officials at all levels knew Paul was telling the truth, as they set out to destroy him.
Where did the blinding revelation come from? Let me go back a few months, to my last attempt to get a new trial for Alisha Owen. At that hearing, Troy Boner, who had originally told Gary Caradori the truth, and who had been forced to recant, was preparing to testify – to tell the truth as you read it in his affidavit in Chapter 21. Troy Boner was going to provide the information in open court, under oath, that would blow the lid off the Franklin case and force a new trial for Alisha Owen.
As Troy came into the courthouse, he was immediately ushered into a private room by county judicial authorities. He was advised that a “Special Attorney” had been appointed to protect him. For approximately one hour, while the hearing was delayed, Troy was cornered in a room with this “Special Attorney” and with other officials from the prosecutor’s office, the very same prosecutorial team Troy was about to testify against.
When Troy came out of the meeting, I knew he was broken, his morale smashed. His head hung down. He could not, or would not look at anyone.
As I approached Troy, his new court-appointed attorney tried to step between us. With probably the last ounce of courage he could muster, Troy leaned over and whispered to me, “Oh God, forgive me. They guaranteed if I talk here today, they will put me away for twenty years. Guaranteed I would never see the light of day again. Told me that I would be charged with perjury for my original testimony, if I opened my mouth today in court. Don’t ~all me up there. I can’t survive in prison. I know they can put me there. Look what they did to Alisha. Look what they did to my brother. I’ve got no choice. They told me I had to take the Fifth Amendment and refuse to testify. Otherwise, they promised I would be taken directly from court to jail”
We all proceeded into the court room, where I called Troy to the stand. I showed Troy his affidavit. He hung his head, and when I asked my first question, “Would you please state your name?” Troy responded, “I take the Fifth Amendment,” an answer he repeated, in a barely audible voice, to all my other questions.
It was hopeless. I ceased my questioning, and shortly thereafter the hearing ended.
I walked back to the judge’s chambers to clear up any final details. Judge Enbody had been specially appointed by the Nebraska State Supreme Court to this hearing, which I had won from the Supreme Court based on Troy’s new information. (The next day I learned that he had been appointed to the Court of Appeals-a very substantial advancement in his career.)
Sitting in Judge Enbody’s chambers, with my head hung so low it was hitting my shoestrings, I was given the key to unlock the meaning of Franklin. “I do not understand it, Your Honor,” I kept repeating. “As God is my witness, I do not think that there is a judge or other person involved in this case who does not know that horrible injustice has been done. Everybody knows that Alisha Owen is telling the truth and that she is being punished for it. And, Your Honor, a person has to be deaf, dumb, blind, and totally dishonest, not to know that some of this state’s and nation’s top businessmen and public officials have engaged in the worst crimes possible, which are now being covered up. And these kids, instead of being honored and protected for exposing these things, are being sent to prison. Why? Why? Why?”
Judge Enbody looked at me. Slowly, his voice shaking, he began to talk.
“I am just a man. I am not a god. I wish I were. I have no choice in what I have done. I am just a man, just a man, not a god. I am doing what I must do with the evidence before me,” Judge Enbody concluded. He appeared even more shaken and upset than I was.
I shook my head. “I don’t understand. I just don’t understand,” I kept repeating. “Everybody knows what is happening, but nobody is willing to do anything about it. Why? Why?!!” Judge Enbody looked at me and said, very slowly, “If you want to understand the entire Franklin case, I can help you. Go read ‘Billy Budd.’ Read ‘Billy Budd.’ If you will do that, John, and if you understand the book, then you will understand the what and why of Franklin, and why it can be no other way. I do not say you will like it. I do not say you will agree with it. But at least you will understand it. That, I promise you. Go read ‘Billy Budd’.”
Those were the last words I spoke with the Judge on the case. I left his chambers, burnt out, but angry. And I forgot all about Billy Budd, until the night I happened upon the movie. The story of Billy Budd is set in the British Navy near the end of the eighteenth century. Billy was a young sailor, who, although impressed into the British Navy, bore no ill will to the authorities for having dragooned him; indeed, he was the very picture of innocence and good-will, and was almost universally loved aboard his war-ship. One officer, however, developed an insane jealousy of Billy, and set out to frame him up for allegedly inciting mutiny. Since there had been several notorious mutinies in the British fleet at the time, the mere whisper of “mutiny” was enough to spread panic among the ship’s officers.
To make a long story short, because of certain incriminating appearances in the case, the captain and his senior officers, although they knew Billy was innocent of all charges, nonetheless sentenced him to hang, a necessity – as they viewed it – to “save the system,” not just on their own ship, but in the British fleet as a whole.
Now I think I do understand the Franklin case. I know, now, that all the public officials involved in Franklin-whether they ever heard of Billy Budd or not-fully understood what they were doing.
And what they all have done, and will continue to do in this case, Franklin, and no doubt many others like it, is this: Protect the “system” at all costs. The “system” is the only ultimate sacred cow-not any particular law or constitution, but only “the system.” Because, ultimately, it is the system which makes certain that the individuals functioning within it – from judges to lawyers, to prosecutors, to politicians, to businessmen – have their places and positions, and opportunities and pecking order, and future.
And, though it is unfortunate, that on occasion the protection of the “system” requires the deliberate sacrifice of perfectly innocent people, that is hoped overall to be the exception rather than the rule. But without the “system” . .
So, Judge Enbody, now I understand. And, as you said, I may not agree, but I do understand.
But then I have one final, nagging question. How do I know when, or if, the “system” itself has become so corrupted, that evil is the rule, rather than the exception? And when that occurs, what do I do about it? But I think I know the answer to that one – my oId commanding officer in Vietnam told me what I had to do. I made some promises to Bill, and I intend to keep them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
[Former] Senator John DeCamp has the honor of being the Nebraska state senator most praised and most attacked by the Omaha World Herald. He was hailed by that paper as the most powerful and effective senator, between 1976 and 1986. During the past two years, the World Herald has attacked him, sometimes daily, for daring to fight against the drug runners and pedophiles they protect.
Today, Senator DeCamp is the lawyer for two victim-witnesses in the Franklin case, Paul Bonacci and Alisha Owen.
DeCamp is known for his tendency to “overturn the apple cart,” and powerful people shake in their boots when DeCamp files an aggressive civil rights suit. There is a method behind this approach, in a state where cowardly cover-up and pitiful inaction have become all too common.
DeCamp served as an officer in Vietnam, and has often said that because of what he has seen, he is determined that the United States must never become a “closed society,” where freedom would disappear as the citizens lost the opportunity to know or affect what was happening around them.
DeCamp was born in Nebraska, but his unusual experiences early in life helped make him a man of uncommon independence and determination. On his own from the age of thirteen, he traveled, lived, and worked in Europe and Iran.
John DeCamp was a captain in the infantry in the Vietnam War and also served with the CORDS program there. He was decorated, and honored at the White House, as one of the outstanding veterans of the Vietnam War. He is proud that he was also the initiator and organizer of the internationally famous Operation Baby Lift, which evacuated 2,800 Vietnamese children who were orphaned in the war in 1975. All the children were subsequently reunited with people from their families, or adopted. On one flight alone, nearly 800 children were evacuated, probably the most people ever flown on one plane. DeCamp and his wife were foster parents for some of these children, until they could be placed for adoption. They have four children of their own.
While still in Vietnam, DeCamp became the first person ever to win election to the Nebraska Legislature, while serving in combat abroad. Although known as a key figure in Nebraska politics, he was not known to agree to any political deal that would compromise his principles. Senator DeCamp was regarded as powerful, but not politically “owned.” He once bucked political powerbroker Eugene Mahoney, by running against Mahoney’s choice for U.S. Senator.
As a Vietnam veteran with thirty percent disability, DeCamp has been the attorney and state lobbyist for both the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a national committeeman of the VFW and member of the American Legion.
John DeCamp has emphasized that in his mind, his experience in saving the defenseless children who were victims of war, and his commitment to save children victimized by the pedophile ring, are equivalent. At the beginning of 1991, DeCamp filed a twelve-count suit in federal court, charging sixteen prominent individuals and institutions, including Larry King, Harold Andersen and the Omaha Police Department, with conspiracy to deprive Paul Bonacci of his civil rights. DeCamp’s suit detailed slander, false imprisonment, child abuse, assault, battery and infliction of emotional distress suffered by Bonacci.
DeCamp has been the target of energetic and systematic efforts to bankrupt him, by behind-the-scenes pressures to deprive him of law and lobbying clients, as a result of his Franklin-related work.
Since taking Bonacci’s case in 1990, DeCamp has also been on the receiving end of personal threats. He told a journalist that during the previous year, “enough events, and mysterious deaths, and personal communications to me from extremely credible and responsible people, have made me believe that there is a very grave potential for getting killed. . . . ” Bonacci’s life, he added, “I think. . . is on a lot, lot, lot thinner string than even mine.”
On June 21, 1991, the day Alisha Owen was convicted, DeCamp received another message, suggesting that he leave Nebraska for his and his family’s safety. DeCamp treats these signs of danger seriously, but says he can’t turn back. John DeCamp’s actions speak loudly and clearly about his intentions. He is staying, and he is fighting.
