Google Maps fixing its N-word problem and The CERN WORD

Google Maps fixing its N-word problem and The CERN WORD

Google Maps search

Google is fixing an issue with its Google Maps search function, which currently leads people to The White House if they search for variations of the n-word with the word house.

Multiple media outlets, including the Washington Post and the Huffington Post, reported the issue Tuesday afternoon after a Twitter user first posted a screen shot of the problem.

“Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused,” a Google spokeswoman said in an email statement.

The reason for the problem is unclear, but one search expert thinks it’s likely due to how Google links certain phrases and terms to locations on the map.

“What we think is the cause, is that Google is seeing how people are talking about places on blogs, and Google’s making those associations,” Danny Sullivan, the notable founding editor of Search Engine Land, told CNNMoney. Sullivan says this isn’t a problem where someone overtly made this search query redirect to The White House.

“People might be saying [these things] generally, and it doesn’t even need to be a lot references,” he added. “It’s kind of crowdsoucing terms gone bad.”

This is the second major Google Maps issue in the past two months.

In April, someone discovered an illustration of an Android robot peeing on an Apple logo in a rural area of Pakistan. Google suspended its public Map Maker tool and started to review every submission manually after the incident.

Google says it is working to fix The White House Google Maps issue “quickly.”

Google Maps shuts down editing after ‘robot peeing’ incident

Tsk, tsk. It was too much of a good thing.

Starting on Tuesday, Google is suspending its public Map Maker tool — preventing its community of users from independently adding landmarks and helpful tips to Google Maps.

The reason? There are too many pranksters out there.

Until recently, a loyal community amateur cartographers routinely edited Google Maps with little oversight. But after someone created a fake park in Pakistan — in the shape of an Android robot peeing on an Apple logo — Google imposed a strict review process.

The company started to manually review every submission. But Google (GOOGL, Tech30) now says it can’t handle the deluge of work coming in. Pavithra Kanakarajan, a member of the company’s Google Maps team, explained the situation in a blog post Friday.

“Every edit you make is essentially going to a backlog that is growing very fast,” she said. “It is not fair to any of our users to let them continue to spend time editing.”

Kanakarajan said “the most recent incident” — likely the peeing Android robot — came from “a strong user in our community.” That explains why no one noticed the image sooner.

In the old system, Google mappers edited fellow mappers. Prolific contributors gained enough trust that their submissions were no longer subject to public review before going live.

And these map edits were most likely in rural areas. After all, Google created Map Maker in 2011 to improve the accuracy of its popular tool. Locals know if a highway is a one-way road, or if there’s a small lake. That’s especially true in rural regions that don’t get analyzed often by satellites in space.

That peeing Android robot was created as a fake park in the outskirts of Rawalpindi, a Pakistani city less than 10 miles southwest of Islamabad.

And it looks like this wasn’t the only incident. In her note, Kanakarajan said “we have been experiencing escalated attacks to spam Google Maps over the past few months.”

A Google spokesperson said some users have been creating “all kinds of map pranks,” such as fake highway exits.

But Google isn’t saying who this mysterious map editor was — or when the map editing tool might come back.

I often hear people argue that the United States is a republic, not a democracy. But that’s a false dichotomy. A common definition of “republic” is, to quote the American Heritage Dictionary, “A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them” — we are that. A common definition of “democracy” is, “Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives” — we are that, too.

The United States is not a direct democracy, in the sense of a country in which laws (and other government decisions) are made predominantly by majority vote. Some lawmaking is done this way, on the state and local levels, but it’s only a tiny fraction of all lawmaking. But we are a representative democracy, which is a form of democracy.

American statesmen and legal commentators from the Framing on. It’s true that some Framing-era commentators made arguments that distinguished “democracy” and “republic”; see, for instance, The Federalist (No. 10), though even that first draws the distinction between “pure democracy” and a “republic,” only later just saying “democracy.” But even in that era, “representative democracy” was understood as a form of democracy, alongside “pure democracy”: John Adams used the term “representative democracy” in 1794; so did Noah Webster in 1785; so did St. George Tucker in his 1803 edition of Blackstone; so did Thomas Jefferson in 1815. Tucker’s Blackstone likewise uses “democracy” to describe a representative democracy, even when the qualifier “representative” is omitted.

Likewise, James Wilson, one of the main drafters of the Constitution and one of the first Supreme Court Justices, defended the Constitution in 1787 by speaking of the three forms of government being the “monarchical, aristocratical, and democratical,” and said that in a democracy the sovereign power is “inherent in the people, and is either exercised by themselves or by their representatives.” And Chief Justice John Marshall — who helped lead the fight in the 1788 Virginia Convention for ratifying the U.S. Constitution — likewise defended the Constitution in that convention by describing it as implementing “democracy” (as opposed to “despotism”), and without the need to even add the qualifier “representative.”

To be sure, in addition to being a representative democracy, the United States is also a constitutional democracy, in which courts restrain in some measure the democratic will. And the United States is therefore also a constitutional republic. Indeed, the United States might be labeled a constitutional federal representative democracy. But where one word is used, with all the oversimplification that this necessary entails, “democracy” and “republic” both work. Indeed, since direct democracy — again, a government in which all or most laws are made by direct popular vote — would be impractical given the number and complexity of laws that pretty much any state or national government is expected to enact, it’s unsurprising that the qualifier “representative” would often be omitted. Practically speaking, representative democracy is the only democracy that’s around at any state or national level.

Now one can certainly argue that some aspects of U.S. government should become less direct, and filtered through more layers of representation. One can argue, for instance, that the 17th Amendment should be repealed, and that U.S. senators should no longer be elected directly by the people, but should return to being elected by state legislators who are elected by the people. Or one can argue for repealing state- and local-level initiative and referendum schemes. Or one can argue for making the Electoral College into a deliberative body, in which the electors are supposed to discuss the candidates and make various political deals, rather than being elected solely to vote for particular candidates. And of course one can equally argue for making some aspects of U.S. government more direct, for instance by shifting to truly direct election of the president, or by institute a federal-level initiative and referendum.

But there is no basis for saying that the United States is somehow “not a democracy, but a republic.” “Democracy” and “republic” aren’t just words that a speaker can arbitrarily define to mean something (e.g., defining democracy as “a form of government in which all laws are made directly by the people”). They are terms that have been given meaning by English speakers more broadly. And both today and in the Framing era, “democracy” has been generally understood to include representative democracy as well as direct democracy.

Grant HERMES is reporting on the scene from the Waco Texas , Twin Peaks, BIKER BRAWL between the Cossacks , Scimitars, Leathernecks, and the Bandidos… 9 killed 18 injured.

Biker Brawl? Waco? Twin Peaks? Bandidos, Scimitars, Leathernecks + Cossacks biker gangs????

Biker Brawl = Double Trouble

Hermes = the winged messenger of the gods

Waco Texas = Branch Davidian David Koresh claimed he was god

Twin Peaks = freakish TV show which took place in Twin Peaks, Washington

“A cossack is a member of a people of southern Russia and Ukraine, noted for their horsemanship and military skill.”

Leatherneck is a military slang term for a member of the United States Marine Corps, or of the British Royal Marines

“A Scimitar is a sword with a curved blade that was used in the past especially in the Middle East and western Asia”

“A bandido is a Mexican bandit, especially as represented in movies and popular culture.”

“The Bandidos Motorcycle Club, also known as the Bandido Nation, is a “one-percenter” motorcycle club and organized crime syndicate with a worldwide membership. The club was formed in 1966 by Don Chambers in Texas.”

So we have the “ONE %” + “Marines” verses “RUSSIA” who is allied with Middle East?

9 killed and 18 injured.

35 years?

Shock: USA Today Reports; Barry Soetoro Appears

On Obama’s Columbia University Identification Card

As reported here Donald Trump thrashed Obama on Twitter last night calling-out Obama by his Indonesian citizen name Barry Soetoro. The following excerpts from two leftist media outlets show why the American media is useless.

The first excerpt is from the USA Today: Trump hits Twitter to blame Obama for Ebola in NYC

[…] Trump went in further during a series of tweets.

In one, he made reference to the name Barry Soetoro, which appears on Obama’s Columbia University identification card. “I never thought I’d say it in my lifetime, but President Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Sotoro, is a far worse president than Jimmy Carter!”

In another, he offered more insults.

“President Obama, you are a complete and total disaster, but you have a chance to do something great and important: STOP THE FLIGHTS!”

The White House did not immediately respond to an e-mail requesting comment.
[…] USA Today.

The second excerpt is from the Inquisitr: Donald Trump: ‘Obama Should Resign’ Over Ebola Case In New York City — ‘TOTAL Incompetence’

[…] Trump’s offhand characterization of Obama as “aka Barry Sotoro,” (sic) is a reference to an internet hoax purporting to show a 1981 student identification card from Obama’s days as a student at Columbia University. The card shows a picture of the young Obama but bears the name “Barry Soetoro,” and identifies “Soetoro” as “Foreign Student.”

The hoax circulated widely during Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, despite being quickly exposed as a nothing more than a crudely altered version of a 1998 Columbia ID card issued to a student named Thomas Lugert.
[…] Inquisitr.

USA Today‘s Melanie Eversley is either one of the biggest idiots in the media or she knows something we don’t…

Although Inquisitr‘s Jonathan Vankin is correct the Columbia University ID card floating around the internet with Obama’s picture and name Barry Soetoro on it is without a doubt a fake. Vankin leaves out the irrefutable proof Obama was listed as an Indonesian citizen under the name Barry Soetoro on his school registration form, first obtained by the Associated Press and later confirmed by the television show Inside Edition (see below).

There is a Fukushima scam going on. People saying ‘all life in the pacific is dead due to Fukushima’.

A guy raising major funds saying no pacific life, is also saying ‘no bugs are on the West coast due to Fukushima’….

Its a scam to fleece the community.

There is indeed life in the Pacific, and there are bugs on the West coast.

Raising money from the community , saying they have PROVED there are ‘no bugs’ , and PROVED the ‘pacific is dead’. Shaky short videos , heavily edited, intentionally omitting ‘life’.

Big name channels on youtube pushing this scam.

Their new goal, everyone donate $1 , needing 30,000 people to give!

They already got a $25,000 boat, a brand new HF RADAR, and a paid West coast ‘expedition’ to ‘prove’ a false claim.

It was a false claim to begin with, setting out to prove NOTHING is there. How does one ‘ prove ‘ ‘nothing is there’? Its a logical fallacy, proving something is NOT there??? Need to raise funds to peove the absense of something???

Now, people are trying to push this scam on ENEnews, youtube, facebook, and twitter.

Jim Lee, radchick, beautifulgirlbtdana, xrayultra, triforce troll legion, nibirumagick2012 are all involved with a crew numbering in the dozens, all pushing this latest Fukushima hoax.

The whole attack on us this past week was because I dared to question the ‘no bugs’ claim (jim lees own words on why they slammed me, tat, freeradio, redpill, monty etc).

Its all a huge money making scam!!! Busted wide open now!

Fukushima Emergency

Claim: Image shows radioactive seepage spreading across the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

August 2013]

Japan’s nuclear watchdog has now declared the leak of radioactive water from Fukushima a “state of emergency.” Each day, 300 tons of radioactive water seeps into the ocean, and it’s now clear that TEPCO has engage in a two-and-a-half-year cover-up of immense magnitude.

Origins: The massive (8.9) Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011 resulted in a series of equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns and releases of radioactive materials from the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear disaster since the catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in April 1986.

In August 2013, news accounts quoted an official from Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority as stating that highly radioactive water was seeping from the plant into the Pacific Ocean and creating an “emergency” situation that the plant’s operators were not adequately containing:

Highly radioactive water seeping into the ocean from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is creating an “emergency” that the operator is struggling to contain, an official from the country’s nuclear watchdog said on Monday. This contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier, is rising toward the surface and is exceeding legal limits of radioactive discharge, Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force, [said].Countermeasures planned by Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) are only a temporary solution, he said.Tepco’s “sense of crisis is weak,” Kinjo said. “This is why you can’t just leave it up to Tepco alone” to grapple with the ongoing disaster.

“Right now, we have an emergency,” he said.

References to these news accounts were widely circulated on the Internet accompanied by a color graphic supposedly showing the flow of radioactive discharge from Fukushima all the way across the Pacific Ocean to the western coasts of North and South America and down to Antarctica:

However, that chart did not actually track or measure radioactive discharge emanating from Fukushima in 2013, or any other aspect of the Fukushima disaster. It was a plot created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) immediately after the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011 showing the wave height of the tsunami that followed. It had (and has) nothing to do with the flow or spread of radioactive seepage from Fukushima.

As for whether the current Fukushima “emergency” poses a danger to residents of the U.S., American officials have stated that the diluting effects of the vast Pacific Ocean expanse would likely neutralize any deleterious effects from the radioactive seepage by the time it reached U.S. shores:

In the United States, across the Pacific, there was no sense of alarm.”With the amount of dilution that would occur, any kind of release in Japan would be non-detectable here,” said David Yogi, spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.Eric Norman, a nuclear engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said the latest leak was not a concern.”The Pacific Ocean is an enormous place,” said Norman, who found radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power in California rainwater, milk and plants soon after the earthquake and tsunami. “There’s a lot of material between us and Japan. No matter what happens in Fukushima, it’s not going to be a problem over here.”

Likewise, the Hawaii State Department of Health has been monitoring Japanese water quality surveys and anticipates no public health effect in that state due to leaks from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant:

The Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) continues to monitor the results of water quality surveys [from Japan] and does not anticipate any public health effect on beachgoers or seafood safety around the Hawaiian Islands, due to the following factors:• Water acts as a diluent. While there may be significant quantities of radioactive material released into the sea near the Fukushima reactor site, the massive amount of water in the Pacific Ocean would rapidly dilute and disperse the materials to negligible levels.• Some radioactive isotopes rapidly decay. For example, the half life of Iodine-131 (I-131) is about eight days. This means that the activity level of the I-131 isotope drops by half every eight days. Given the length of time since the event, the short-lived radionuclides would have decayed to near background levels and therefore pose no health hazard. Although Cesium isotopes have longer half-lives (Cs-134 has a half-life of about two years, Cs-137 a longer half-life of about 30 years), the radionuclides also undergo biological excretion and do not continue to build up in fish forever.

(Similar “false image” fears were spurred by the Internet circulation of a nuclear fallout map back in March 2011.)

In December 2013, alarmist reports were spread on the Internet with headlines such as “TEPCO Quietly Admits Reactor 3 Could Be Melting Down Now!” and “Persons residing on the west coast of North America should IMMEDIATELY begin preparing for another possible onslaught of dangerous atmospheric radiation!” Such claims were exaggerations based on much less sensational reports (similar to ones issued several months earlier) which simply stated that the plant’s operators, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), had recently observed steam issuing from one of the damaged Fukushima reactor buildings but had “not identified [any] abnormal plant conditions.” As noted at the Fukushima Diary blog:

Since the end of 2013, a hoax has been going around on the Internet saying that Reactor #3 is experiencing a meltdown. (In fact, it had already melted down some time earlier.)From my observation, this mess started with an article on Enenews saying that Reactor #3 had been observed still steaming multiple times in December, which is correct. However, “steam” has been observed issuing from that reactor beginning in July 2013, and since then it has been observed almost every day. From the frequency of the “steam,” I assume it is evaporated coolant water leaking out of primary containment vessel, and we’re seeing it now because TEPCO has removed the major debris from the top of the reactor. Probably the steam has been coming up since just after [the earthquake of] March 2011. Sure it’s extremely radioactive, nobody can stand on the top of reactor #3, and it’s harmful for the west coast. However, it’s been that way for 3 years now.================================

Nuclear Fallout Map

Claim: Message details effects of nuclear fallout from Japan across the western United States.

Examples: March 2011]

I hope people realize this is amazingly serious if a meltdown happens. The Fallout will travel according to the trade winds…80-120 rads – You have a 10% chance of vomiting and experiencing nausia for a few days

130 -170 rads – You have a 25% chance of vomiting and contracting other symptoms

180-220 rads – You have a 50% chance of vomiting and having other severe physical effects

270 More..-330 rads – 20% chance of death in 6 weeks, or you will recover in a few months.

400-500 rads – 50% chance of death

550-750 rads – Nausea within a few hours; no survivors

1000 rads – immediate incapacitation and death within a week or less.

Japan has “lost control” of 4 out of 5 nuclear reactors at two facilities hit hard by the earthquake. Radioactivity outside the buildings was reported earlier at 8 times ‘normal’—a six-mile radius has been evacuated. Potentially, this could be the worst nuclear accident in history. If you have an iodine supplement (even kelp) take it immediately at a maximum dose and be prepared for fallout across North America in three days, lasting indefinitely.

It would be unprecedented to get accurate news about this event.

Origins: This map showing the projected path of fallout across the western United States following a possible meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan began circulating shortly after a massive 8.9 earthquake hit that country in March 2011. The map bore the logo of the Australian Radiation Services (ARS), an organization which has disclaimed any connection with it:

Australian Radiation Services is aware of information about radioactive contamination being spread from the Japanese nuclear reactor incident released under the ARS logo and name. We wish to be clear that this information has not originated from ARS and as such distance ourselves from any such misinformation.

News accounts reporting on Internet-circulated information about the situation regarding nuclear reactors in Japan noted that:

Some postings were criminally absurd and flat-out wrong. One map that went viral showed color-coded plumes of radiation moving eastward across the Pacific and the prediction that radiation levels measuring 3,000 rads would reach the Aleutian Island chain in three days. Levels of 1,500 rads will hit the northern coast of British Columbia within a week and western North American “from Alaska to the Baja tip in 10 days, with radiation levels of 750 rads,” the posting warned. These numbers, which would kill or sicken quickly, have absolutely no basis in fact at all. And, according to a radiation expert at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, they are more typical of the levels that might occur after a nuclear attack.

As of 17 March 2011, officials were reporting that any radiation which might reach the U.S. would have “extremely minor health consequences”:

A United Nations forecast projects the radioactive plume from the Fukushima facility would reach the Aleutian Islands on Thursday [17 March] and hit Southern California late on Friday [18 March].The projection, calculated on Tuesday [15 March], gives no information about actual radiation levels. Health and nuclear experts emphasize that radiation in the plume will be diluted as it travels and will have extremely minor health consequences in the United States.

The California Emergency Management Agency concurred with that assessment:

Jordan Scott, a spokesman for the California Emergency Management Agency, said nuclear experts had reassured officials in his office that “there is no danger at this time.”Scott said they also have been told that, should a meltdown occur at one of Japan’s quake-damaged nuclear reactors, “it is highly unlikely that we would see any effects of it here.””Things would have to get kind of ‘end of days’ for us to see even a little bit of it here. We’re talking very extreme,” Scott said. “We’re just too far for anything to really reach us. A majority of the materials that would come out of there in a meltdown would dissipate” within miles, he said.
